Student answer (Band 6.0)

In various countries, individuals are becoming keen to find out the history of the place they live in. This essay will cover the underlying reasons and the ways people research about it.

Regarding the reasons, this is mainly due to the growing trend of living in rented house. People's affordability to buy their own place is greatly influenced by the rising inflation, which has compelled them to live in a rented space. Therefore, people investigate the place prior to living, so that they do not have to tackle any kind of challenge in future. For instance, people research about how old the building is, how many families used to live earlier, or what kind of construction material was used for the house. All these findings allow them to figure out any upcoming issue before hand which they might face.

To find out the history, people can approach district government or the relevant land department to collect information. Another best way to get authentic facts is by asking neighbours and locals living nearby. In most of the cases, people who live next to the house are more aware of past incidents then the local authorities. A clear example is, when we shifted to our current house, we get all the past information from our neighbours. It turned out to be useful, because there were many sewerage problems in the house which had to be repaired before moving in to the house.

In conclusion, there is a growing trend, where people collect past information regarding the place they live in. People investigate it on purpose, to know any fault in their living space and get the facts and data from local government records or neighbourhood.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the interest in building history and methods for researching it. The ideas are relevant, such as the link between renting and the need for due diligence, and the suggestion of consulting local records or neighbors. However, the development is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding why people research history is tied almost exclusively to avoiding maintenance issues, which is a narrow interpretation of the topic. A more comprehensive response might have explored cultural interest, architectural appreciation, or historical curiosity. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Regarding the reasons', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing. For example, the phrase 'research about it' in the introduction is slightly vague. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the connection between the reasons (renting) and the research methods could be more fluidly integrated to improve the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'underlying reasons' and 'authentic facts'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'research about it' (research it) and 'tackle any kind of challenge in future' (avoid future problems). The repetition of basic terms like 'house' and 'place' suggests a need for a wider range of synonyms to demonstrate more sophisticated lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'growing trend of living in rented house' (a rented house), 'before hand' (beforehand), and 'more aware of past incidents then' (than). Additionally, the sentence 'we get all the past information' should be in the past tense ('we got'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching the 7.0 band, which requires more frequent error-free sentences.
