Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for interest in house history and methods for research. However, the development is limited. The reason provided—safety concerns regarding secret rooms—is quite specific and lacks broader context, making the argument feel somewhat anecdotal rather than analytical. The methods for research are mentioned briefly but lack detail. To improve, you should expand on more common reasons, such as architectural interest, historical significance, or property value, and provide more sophisticated research methods, such as consulting public archives, land registries, or historical societies.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow between sentences is often mechanical. You rely on basic connectors like 'And' and 'But' at the start of sentences, which limits the sophistication of your writing. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'there things' or 'there own history', where the pronoun usage is confusing. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in light of this') to link ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'too many curiosity' instead of 'a great deal of curiosity' and 'Rob the new new owner'. The repetition of basic words like 'house', 'history', and 'reason' makes the writing feel somewhat simplistic. You should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to history, architecture, and research methodologies to demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('most of the houses has'), incorrect pronoun usage ('there' instead of 'their'), and awkward phrasing ('most of the people have too many curiosity'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like homophones (there/their) and pluralisation.
