Student answer (Band 5.0)

In an ongoing debate many people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in.

The reasons for this is people are fascinated to know about the old history, how our grandparents generation have spent their lives. In olden days, houses were constructed very strong however till now many people were living as their own house and society. The another reason would be till now many old people are healthy with no diseases. The reason for this is, they were use to eat fresh and natural vegetation. The utensils they used was made of sand which made the food delicious and there are weapons through which they use to defeat the opponents they had. For instance, we still live at our grandmother house. It gives us a great feeling to stay and capture more memories remembering the olden days.

The people do research through studying old books, novels and many students gain knowledge from social subject. They also do research for assignments and presentation by visiting various websites on internet and reading history and geography books. For instance, we had social subject in our childhood, we gained enough knowledge reading the subject and felt fascinating on searching more for projects and presentations. In many countries, people was more interested to know their trends and lifestyles how they survived and what are the world wars they faced and how our leaders achieved independence in 1947.

Therefore, I believe that people interests are accurate and they should know everything about the history of the house or building.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the two main prompts of the task by presenting some reasons for researching building history and outlining methods of research, such as reading books and using the internet. However, the development of ideas lacks focus and wanders into irrelevant tangents. For example, when discussing reasons, the essay shifts abruptly to discussing the health, diet, utensils, and weapons of past generations, which stray from the specific context of house or building history. Furthermore, the examples provided, such as 'we still live at our grandmother house', are overly anecdotal rather than analytical. While a clear position is stated towards the end, the limited and tangential development of main ideas places this response at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into distinct paragraphs, attempting a traditional introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression within the paragraphs is frequently disrupted by abrupt shifts in topic. For instance, the transition from housing history to ancient health and weapons in the second body paragraph lacks logical connectivity. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inadequately, with repetitive phrasing such as 'The reason for this is' and 'The another reason would be'. Referencing is at times unclear, and paragraphing could be improved to better group related concepts. Consequently, the flow is disjointed, warranting a Band 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently circling around simple terms like 'history', 'house', 'people', and 'research'. There are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'old history', 'were use to eat', and 'social subject' (likely meaning social studies). Words are often misused in terms of form or context, for instance, writing 'people interests are accurate' instead of valid or correct. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a general meaning, the range is limited and repetition restricts the flow, matching the criteria for a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent, noticeable grammatical errors that cause difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning. Examples of errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('The reasons for this is', 'people was more interested'), tense inconsistencies ('they were use to eat', 'utensils they used was'), and awkward phrasing ('how our grandparents generation have spent'). Punctuation is basic and at times unhelpful. Because errors are frequent and compound structures are often inaccurate, the grammar aligns with Band 5.0.
