Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing reasons why people are interested in the history of their homes (such as emotional connection and safety) and how they can research this (through magazines, newspapers, and local communication). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and lacks depth. For instance, the explanation of how people research building history touches briefly on magazines and newspapers, but remains rather vague and repetitive. The position is generally clear, though the supporting examples, such as the mention of Paris houseowners checking reports, are brief and not fully extended. While all parts of the task are covered, the ideas would benefit from greater elaboration and more specific, well-reasoned examples to meet the higher band criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical paragraph structure, beginning with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs addressing reasons and research methods, and concluding appropriately. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In contrast', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover', though some transitions are somewhat mechanical or used inappropriately in context, such as using 'In contrast' at the beginning of the essay where no contrast exists. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen with pronouns like 'it' in phrases like 'the main reason behind, it will connect them'. Paragraphing is generally handled adequately, but the logical progression within paragraphs is sometimes disrupted by abrupt shifts in topic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic ideas about buildings and history. However, there are frequent errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout the response. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'an increasingly number' instead of 'an increasing number', 'intent' instead of 'intend', 'archieve' instead of 'archive', 'appartnent' instead of 'apartment', 'refrences' instead of 'references', 'luxurios' instead of 'luxurious', 'childerns' instead of 'children's', and 'knowlegde' instead of 'knowledge'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'untoward', 'feasible', and 'architecture', but these attempts are often accompanied by awkward phrasing that slightly impacts the natural flow of the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure. However, the text contains a high frequency of grammatical errors and punctuation issues that frequently disrupt readability. Examples include subject-verb agreement errors ('it good sign', 'it now become feasible'), missing articles ('in the paris', 'in spain'), incorrect prepositions, and faulty clause structures (e.g., 'it informs how all humans lived before' and 'to avoid the any crime and untoward'). Complex sentences are often attempted but frequently faulty, containing structural tangles such as 'the main reason behind, it will connect them more deeply'. These recurring errors mean that error-free sentences are in the minority.
