Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address both parts of the prompt regarding why people research building histories and how they do so, but the ideas are frequently underdeveloped and tangential. Rather than focusing on historical research, the essay digresses into general discussions about building materials, population growth, and regional architecture, such as stating that 'most of the houses were built by mud and some other type of material.' While the writer mentions the internet as a research tool, the connection to uncovering a specific building's history remains weak and unclear throughout the text. Consequently, the response meets the minimum length requirement but falls short of fully developing a clear position on the topic, leading to a Band 5.0 score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the overall organization lacks a clear, logical progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on conjunctions like 'However,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In addition' to link loosely related sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is confusing; for instance, paragraph two abruptly shifts from historical materials to modern techniques without maintaining a coherent flow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought. Overall, the structural framework is present but mechanical and faulty, aligning with the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms such as 'houses,' 'material,' 'people,' and 'build.' There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'people are very sensitive to their building' and 'the value of money also increases,' which sound unnatural in English. While the student attempts to use some less common words like 'excessive variety' and 'region,' these attempts are often imprecise or inaccurate. The lexical range is minimally adequate to convey basic concepts, but frequent inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing restrict the score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and coordination. Attempts at complex sentences frequently result in faulty structures and persistent errors, such as 'every property have a significant value,' 'technology have improved,' and 'people built there houses.' There are also issues with tense consistency and subject-verb agreement throughout the text. Punctuation errors, particularly run-on sentences with multiple clauses joined loosely by conjunctions, are common. Because these frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader and complex structures are handled poorly, a Band 4.5 or rounded 5.0 is appropriate; 5.0 reflects the baseline communication achieved.
