IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, more and more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in.

What are the reasons for this?

How can people research this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

A lot of people are keen to know the history of the houses, or the buildings they live in, and it is getting very common. There can be different reasons for this approach, as people might want to know the materials that were used at the time of construction, and they can find it by contacting councils.

There are several reasons for people to know about the history of their houses. Firstly, it allow them to understand the significance of their houses, and if it was the part of any specific era. Moreover people like to understand how the property prices changed over time and about the worth of their property in current days. In addition to that, people are also showing interest to know the history so they can decide whether the buildings need any reconstruction.

People can get to know about the history of their homes by contacting real estate agents, as they usually keep records of all buying and selling deals. The residents of the house can also contact local councils and get information about the time their house was constructed. Councils usually have all the relevant details, as people have to get approval from them before starting any construction work. For instance, my brother bought a house last year and later found out that there is a way to the basement from the wardrobe in their bedroom. He got surprised and started invenstigating about the history of his house. He found out that the previous owner was a police inspector and he needed a place to hide from a criminal.

In conclusion, I believe that people have every right to know about the history of their houses, and they can do it by contacting councils or libraries.
