Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the task by discussing the reasons why people are interested in the history of their homes and explaining ways to research this. In the introduction, the writer outlines the essay's scope clearly. However, the development of ideas in the body paragraphs is somewhat brief and under-developed. For instance, the point regarding architecture and renovation is expressed with some grammatical confusion: 'the architecture and renovation which people want to change should get the complete information about the building'. While the main points are relevant—covering curiosity, renovation, and financial value, as well as offline records, books, and elderly residents as sources—they lack deeper extension and concrete examples. Nevertheless, the response covers all parts of the prompt adequately, earning a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the prompt, with body paragraphs dedicated to reasons and research methods respectively. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. The spelling error 'Additioally' and awkward cohesive links such as 'So that the unique designes' disrupt the natural flow of ideas. Referencing is mostly clear, but the logical progression between sentences in the second body paragraph stumbles slightly due to abrupt shifts in ideas. Overall, the organizational structure is apparent, but cohesive devices require more accurate handling to reach a higher band, placing this firmly at Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their main ideas successfully. There are attempts to use less common items and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'fascinated', 'renovation', and 'heritage'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'Additioally', 'designes' instead of designs, and 'pervious' instead of previous. Furthermore, phrasing like 'financial value of historical information' lacks precision and natural collocation. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they restrict the lexical range and accuracy, indicating a standard consistent with Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts relative clauses and subordinate structures, such as 'which people want to change' and 'Learning about these pervious residents can give people a stronger sense of belonging'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'numerous people are becoming fascinated as well as concerned in finding out' and 'the architecture and renovation which people want to change should get the complete information'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but structural inaccuracies in complex sentences cause some difficulty for the reader. The frequency of grammatical slips places this performance at a Band 5.5.
