Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing reasons why people research the history of their homes and explaining methods for conducting such research. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and hinges heavily on a rather unusual premise—namely, that buildings have names which might carry spiritual bonds or be scary to tenants. While this is a creative angle, it narrows the scope of the essay significantly compared to broader socio-historical reasons such as architectural preservation or family heritage. The position is stated, but the support lacks depth and extension, leading to a Band 5.5 classification under task achievement descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a basic progression of ideas, moving from reasons to research methods. However, paragraphing and mechanical cohesion are problematic. For instance, sentences like 'this allows visitors to navigate' start with lowercase letters after full stops, and transition phrases are overly simplistic or repetitive (e.g., 'To begin with', 'Furthermore'). Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or mechanical, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'Associating oneself with a buiding without knowing the building name is not advisable.' Overall cohesion aligns best with a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited, minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task. There are several spelling and typographical errors, such as 'buliding', 'informatin', 'thier', 'scree', 'knowoldgable', 'attatchment', and 'internent'. Word choice is frequently basic or imprecise, as seen in phrases like 'the theory behind the owner giving the apartment a given name' and 'spiritual attatchment'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general message, noticeable spelling errors and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader, placing this response firmly in the Band 5.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent punctuation errors, particularly missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'this allows', 'some names maybe'). Grammatical errors include missing articles ('the history of houses we live in'), incorrect prepositional usage ('interviews to the elderly people'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('the know if there is'). Complex structures often contain errors that cause strain for the reader. These features reflect the Band 5.0 descriptors for grammatical accuracy and range.
