Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is considered that in some nations, the majority of people are now more engaging to get information about past events of the place or home where they live. This essay discusses the several underlying factors why individuals are interested in the house's history such as personal safety and researching it from public data and the internet.

The primary reason for this concern is that the individuals are willing to know about historical events like how that place looked, what type of persons lived there and how they survived in the past. In other words, there are some questions in individuals' minds to gather more information about the place where they live or wish to move. Therefore, they judge or compare that place with the collected knowledge. In addition, the second reason for this issue is basically in concern of personal safety. To explain it, individuals check the past residents of that building, to know the data and events of the place because sometimes there might be illegal activities happened in the previous time. Thus, the place will be dangerous for future homeowners.

There are effective practical way to research about the history of the building. The first and foremost technique is the internet, the internet makes easy to search not only about the previous events but also the present circumstances, without any physical survey. It is the best and the easiest way to collect information about the house's history. For instance, some websites on the internet such as Mango and CheckData help individuals to check the past data of any area. Moreover, some individuals prefer to gain knowledge from the public database that who lived there and for how long.

In conclusion, property holders are becoming interested in finding out the history of that property mainly because of the safety and family security, and some people are passionate about history. They can research about the past circumstances of any place through the internet and the public databases.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the reasons why people research the history of their homes and how they can conduct this research. In the introduction, you state that you will discuss factors like personal safety and public data/internet. The body paragraphs successfully expand on these points, exploring curiosity about past residents and security concerns, followed by methods like the internet and public databases. However, some of the ideas are slightly repetitive or lack deep elaboration, which keeps the response at a Band 6.5 level. For instance, the explanation of safety concerns ('sometimes there might be illegal activities happened in the previous time') is a bit general and could be supported with a more specific example. Overall, the task is adequately addressed with a clear stance and relevant ideas throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, following a logical structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'In addition', 'The first and foremost technique', and 'Moreover'. However, some cohesive links feel a bit mechanical or awkward, such as 'To explain it, individuals check the past residents...' and 'There are effective practical way to research'. Paragraphing is handled appropriately, with each main idea grouped into its own paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional awkward phrasing affects the overall flow. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors, where information and ideas are arranged coherently, but some cohesive devices are faulty or repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The lexical resource is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common vocabulary items such as 'underlying factors', 'circumstances', and 'public database'. However, there are noticeable limitations and word choice inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, writing 'more engaging to get information' instead of 'keen to find out', or 'illegal activities happened' instead of 'illegal activities took place'. You also repeated words like 'individuals' and 'history' frequently. While communication is not impeded, these frequent lexical slips and instances of unnatural collocation prevent the response from achieving a higher band score, making Band 6.0 an accurate assessment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('the place where they live') and conditional-like phrasing ('if there might be'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several errors in article usage, preposition selection, and verb forms. Examples include 'There are effective practical way' (plural/singular mismatch), 'the internet makes easy to search' (missing object), and 'illegal activities happened in the previous time' (tense and collocation errors). Despite these frequent errors, the meaning is generally clear and does not impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and persistent errors is characteristic of the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, with a 6.0 being justified by the successful communication of complex ideas despite the flaws.
