Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the reasons why people investigate the history of their homes and the methods they can use to research it. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the mention of searching for 'hidden gold like people do in the past' is slightly simplistic or unusual, and the points about research methods are quite brief. While the writer states an opinion ('In my opinion, finding the names of old owners...'), the overall support and extension of ideas are relatively basic. This aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor, where all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas tend to be under-developed or lack full elaboration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to divide the response into appropriate paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs addressing reasons and methods, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the sentence 'People can do thing using different methods...' lacks smooth transitional phrases, and referencing is occasionally unclear or repetitive ('history of house' is repeated frequently). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved to ensure a more seamless logical progression. These features are characteristic of Band 6 performance.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday and topic-relevant concepts such as 'archeologists', 'life-style', and 'registry'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'large number of people getting interested' (missing article and auxiliary verb), 'remainings' (remnants), 'percious' (precious), and 'photograpghs' (spelling error). While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, control is inconsistent, and some errors occur. This places the lexical performance firmly at Band 5.5, which rounds to 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is uneven. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding missing articles ('large number of people getting interested', 'history of house'), incorrect verb forms ('people that may live', 'that they used'), and preposition usage. For instance, 'Scientists that do the research in old building history using the remainings of history called archeologists' contains multiple structural and punctuation flaws. Although the meaning remains mostly clear despite these slips, the frequency of errors prevents the text from achieving a Band 6, making Band 5 a more accurate reflection of grammatical control.
