Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, an increasing number of people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in. This essay will discuss the reasons for this interest and explain how people can research the history of their houses or buildings.

There are several reasons why people are interested in finding out about their houses or buildings. They may want to know who built their house, what types of materials were used in it, and who lived there first. There are many questions that automatically come to mind when people think about the history of their homes. For example, my uncle once told me that his house was built by a local businessman more than 50 years ago. Secondly, learning about the past stories of houses can create a strong emotional connection with them. My grandfather also told me stories about his house when I was a child. He shared his memories of how his house was built and what types of materials were used in it.

There are several ways to research the history of buildings. One useful method is to visit libraries and search through old maps and books. A second useful method is to visit government institutions that keep records of properties in a city or country. These records can provide specific information about the area where a house is located, its age and its previous owners. A third and very interesting way to research a house is to talk to your neighbors, especially older people. They may have useful information or clues about the house and the people who lived there in the past.

In conclusion, people are increasingly interested in the history of their homes because they are curious about the past and want to feel more connected to their surroundings. They can investigate this history through official records, the internet, libraries, old maps and conversations with older local residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the reasons why people are interested in the history of their houses and the methods they can use to research them. The introduction clearly outlines the essay scope, and the body paragraphs logically separate the reasons and the research methods. Ideas are generally well-extended, though the examples relying on personal anecdotes (such as 'my uncle once told me') lean towards personal experiences rather than broader societal examples, which is acceptable in IELTS Task 2. Overall, all parts of the prompt are covered sufficiently, positioning this performance firmly at Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the clear address of the task and logical development, Band 7.0 is well deserved.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: an introduction, reasons in the second paragraph, methods in the third paragraph, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'Secondly', 'One useful method', 'A second useful method', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately, though referencing and transitional phrases can occasionally feel a little formulaic or mechanical. Nevertheless, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow, satisfying the requirements for Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'emotional connection', 'government institutions', and 'previous owners'. While the vocabulary is generally precise enough to communicate meaning clearly, there is some repetition in sentence openings and phrase choices (e.g., repeating 'types of materials were used in it'). Spelling and word choice are accurate for the most part, with minor slips that do not impede communication. This matches the criteria for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses ('the history of the house or building they live in') and conditional or temporal structures. Punctuation and sentence structures are generally well-controlled. While there are a few minor grammatical lapses and simple constructions, the majority of sentences are grammatically sound and communication is never impeded. The grammatical range and accuracy comfortably meets the standard for Band 6.5, leaning towards Band 7 due to good control of complex syntax.
