Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries, an increasing number of people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in. This essay will discuss the reasons for this interest and explain how people can research the history of their houses or buildings.
There are several reasons why people are interested in finding out about their houses or buildings. They may want to know who built their house, what types of materials were used in it, and who lived there first. There are many questions that automatically come to mind when people think about the history of their homes. For example, my uncle once told me that his house was built by a local businessman more than 50 years ago. Secondly, learning about the past stories of houses can create a strong emotional connection with them. My grandfather also told me stories about his house when I was a child. He shared his memories of how his house was built and what types of materials were used in it.
There are several ways to research the history of buildings. One useful method is to visit libraries and search through old maps and books. A second useful method is to visit government institutions that keep records of properties in a city or country. These records can provide specific information about the area where a house is located, its age and its previous owners. A third and very interesting way to research a house is to talk to your neighbours, especially older people. They may have useful information or clues about the house and the people who lived there in the past.
In conclusion, people are increasingly interested in the history of their homes because they are curious about the past and want to feel more connected to their surroundings. They can investigate this history through official records, the internet, libraries, old maps and conversations with older local residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying reasons why people research their homes, such as curiosity about past materials and owners and creating emotional connections, and by outlining clear research methods like libraries, government records, and talking to neighbours. The ideas are relevant and supported by personal anecdotes, such as the mention of the writer's uncle and grandfather. However, the development of ideas leans somewhat on personal examples rather than broader societal analysis, which keeps the response at a Band 6.5 to 7 level. Overall, the task is answered clearly and effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: an introduction, reasons for researching home history, methods for conducting research, and a clear conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text, as seen in phrases like 'There are several reasons', 'Secondly', and 'One useful method'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the essay is easy to follow from start to finish. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an overall coherent structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'emotional connection', 'government institutions', and 'previous owners'. While there are attempts at less common vocabulary, the language tends to rely on somewhat repetitive or common phrases (e.g., 'several reasons', 'useful method'). Spelling and word choice are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should integrate a wider variety of sophisticated and less common lexical items with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures appropriately. Sentences such as 'There are many questions that automatically come to mind when people think about the history of their homes' show a good command of grammar. While there are a few minor errors and the sentence structures can occasionally be repetitive, the grammar and punctuation are controlled well enough that they rarely impede communication. The majority of the sentences are clear and grammatically sound.
