Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying reasons why people research their home history and outlining methods to do so. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the reason regarding checking previous problems is mentioned briefly without much extension, and the methods discussed are rather general. Examples given, such as a house being owned by a famous local person, help support the main points, but some sections tend to over-generalise. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to fully develop every idea with more specific, detailed explanations and examples rather than relying on brief statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from reasons in the first body paragraph to research methods in the second. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different stages of the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'One main reason', 'In addition', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly' are employed, although referencing and linking can sometimes feel a bit mechanical. To move into the higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow with greater subtlety.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate straightforward ideas effectively. There are attempts to use less common items such as 'surroundings', 'archives', and 'community', though some word choice and collocation inaccuracies appear, such as 'becoming interesting' instead of 'interested', and spelling or word-form slips like 'probles', 'neighbour', and 'governement'. These errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer must demonstrate a broader lexical range with greater precision in word choice and fewer errors in spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent attempt at complex structures such as relative clauses ('the place they live in') and conditional or modal structures ('It might have been owned'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('an interesting story'), unnecessary capitalisation ('Nowadays, In many countries'), and minor pluralisation issues ('historic events' versus singular contexts). However, these errors are limited and rarely impede communication. To reach a higher tier, the writer needs to produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences while maintaining a strong command of complex grammatical structures and punctuation.
