Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt by attempting to explain reasons for researching building histories and how people conduct this research. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed, falling short of a fully articulated discussion. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the text contains only 244 words against the required minimum of 250 words. The explanations regarding why people investigate their home history are repetitive, revolving simply around curiosity and elder stories, while the methods section relies heavily on physical tools like machinery, cameras, and drones rather than historical research methods like archives, land registries, or census records. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, keeping the response at a lower band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic level of organization in the response, with a rudimentary introduction, a body paragraph focusing on reasons, a body paragraph focusing on methods, and a brief conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the flow between sentences often feels disjointed. Cohesive devices are used rather repetitively and sometimes inaccurately, such as the frequent reliance on 'and' and 'if we want to'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it harder for the reader to follow the train of thought smoothly throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally impede smooth communication. The student attempts to use some less common words and phrases, such as 'machinary' and 'history biodata', but these show issues with word choice and spelling. Repetition of basic terms like 'house', 'building', 'people', and 'history' restricts the lexical range. While meaning is generally conveyed at a basic level, the lack of precise terminology and recurring lexical inaccuracies prevent the writing from achieving a higher rating.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical structures employed are relatively limited, consisting mostly of simple and occasionally faulty complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles, such as 'People are finding history of their houses', 'who make this building', and 'This era have modern technologies'. Attempts at complex structures often result in errors, including awkward conditional clauses like 'if we want to see under the earth we have many types of machinary'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty and strain for the reader, though the core meaning of the sentences usually remains retrievable.
