Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response responds to the task only minimally and remains severely incomplete, primarily because the length requirement is not met. The student wrote only 97 words, falling significantly short of the 250-word minimum. While the response touches on why people want to know the history of their house, such as curiosity or crime records, the ideas are extremely limited and under-developed. Furthermore, the second body paragraph cuts off abruptly at 'For example -', leaving the second part of the prompt regarding how people can research this largely unaddressed. To reach higher bands, the writer must fully develop all parts of the prompt and ensure the essay meets the minimum word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

Information and ideas are not arranged coherently across the text. While there is an attempt to use basic cohesive devices like 'To commence with' and 'Therefore', the logical progression is disrupted by the extreme brevity of the text and incomplete sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph consists of an unfinished fragment, which impedes the overall flow and structure of the response. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of a proper conclusion prevents any sense of overall progression. To improve in this area, the writer needs to group related ideas into fully formed paragraphs and ensure a clear, logical sequence from introduction to conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and basic, resulting in noticeable errors that can cause some difficulty for the reader. The writer relies heavily on simple words and repetitive phrasing, such as 'interested to know' and 'curious to know'. There are noticeable word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'amny from from various countries' and 'get the complete knowledge can help them'. Spelling and word form issues also appear throughout the brief text. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range by incorporating less common vocabulary and ensuring accurate word choices and collocations suitable for academic writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. The text contains noticeable grammatical issues, including subject-verb agreement errors ('amny from from various countries are interested') and faulty clause structures where verbs and subjects are misused ('that what had happened there' and 'in order to get the complete knowledge can help them'). Complex sentence attempts are heavily flawed, and punctuation is lacking in the unfinished concluding fragment. To improve, the writer needs to focus on foundational grammar, ensure complete sentence structures with correct subjects and verbs, and reduce the frequency of basic errors.
