Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the reasons for researching building history and the methods to do so, yet the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the explanation regarding increased free time is introduced but lacks extension with concrete examples, relying instead on generalized statements like "basic necessities of life are met to a considerable extent." Similarly, the methods suggested for research, such as "meeting the people who are living for a long period" or visiting a "real state office," are mentioned briefly without elaboration. While a basic position and relevant ideas are present, the lack of depth keeps the response at this level. To move higher, the writer needs to fully extend and support each idea with specific, well-reasoned examples rather than skimming the surface of each point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraph breaks that separate the introduction, the reasons, the research methods, and the conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally disrupted by mechanical or inaccurate cohesive devices. For example, sentences such as "To sum up, there are numerous ways ehich people can use..." and the repetitive use of transition words like "Moreover" and "Furthermore" show a lack of flexible referencing. Additionally, the final paragraph redundantly restates points without adding new progression. To achieve a higher score, the writer must ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally and that logical links between sentences and paragraphs guide the reader smoothly throughout the text, avoiding repetitive structures and awkward phrasing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message of the essay. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "technological advert" (intended as advancement) and "livelihood," but these attempts are often marred by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling. Words like "accomodations," "ehich," and "Wheras" demonstrate spelling issues, while phrases like "giving a thought to the history" sound unnatural in an academic context. Vocabulary control is inconsistent, and these lexical slips occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their range of functional academic vocabulary, paying closer attention to exact word forms, correct spellings, and natural collocations rather than relying on basic or mistranslated terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside frequent attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are recurrent errors in punctuation, sentence boundary issues, and fragment sentences, such as starting a sentence with "Where they can get the photographs..." and writing "There are particular reasons due to people are more interested..." instead of using correct relative clauses or prepositional patterns. Subject-verb agreement and article usage also show frequent inaccuracies, such as "perople are curious" and "history of buildings." These frequent errors require the reader to decode the intended meaning. To reach the next level, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of error-free complex sentence forms, exercising stricter control over punctuation, dependent clauses, and basic grammatical agreements.
