Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt only partially, fulfilling the requirement of discussing both reasons and methods for researching building history, but the ideas are limited and under-developed. For example, the reasons mentioned such as 'cultural' curiosity or 'history of building' are repetitive and lack detailed explanation or supporting examples. Similarly, the methods suggested—checking old newspapers, maps, and talking to property owners—are briefly listed rather than extended with specific scenarios or personal experiences. The writer does attempt to answer both parts of the task, but the lack of fully developed ideas keeps the response at this level. To improve, the writer should expand each main point with concrete explanations and relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organization with paragraphs present, but the overall progression of ideas lacks clarity. The response moves between reasons and research methods without a smooth, logical flow. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on simple transitional phrases like 'On the other hand,' and 'Further more,' which do not always logically fit the context. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow which building or group of people is being discussed in certain sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion needs strengthening through better logical connectors and clearer topic sentences to guide the reader seamlessly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'fasinated,' 'curisity,' and 'informantions,' but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable spelling errors and incorrect word forms. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'avarage population' instead of 'average population' or 'general public,' and 'old lands owner.' These errors are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth reading. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, ensure correct word forms and spelling, and use precise collocations appropriate for academic writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writer demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic clauses. Attempts at more complex sentence forms are frequently faulty, leading to structural breakdowns such as fragments and run-on sentences, for example, 'The question making a person so interested about history of building.' Frequent errors occur in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after periods and incorrect comma splices. These frequent grammatical errors cause significant difficulty for the reader in places. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tense consistency, and reducing foundational grammatical errors.
