Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying reasons for researching a building's history, such as natural human curiosity and modern education systems, and outlining research methods like public records and the internet. The content is generally relevant and shows the higher-level trait of extending ideas, particularly when discussing how local authorities and libraries digitise archives. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or simplistic, such as the example of the YouTuber, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band. The position is clear throughout, and the main prompt questions receive direct attention in both the body paragraphs and the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the reasons and the research methods into distinct sections. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, with transitions such as "Additionally," "Furthermore," and "In conclusion" guiding the reader. However, cohesion occasionally feels somewhat mechanical or repetitive in sentence openings, and referencing is not always entirely smooth, indicating the characteristics of a solid intermediate response that meets the criteria for this band while touching upon clearer organisational patterns.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as "municipalities," "accessibility," and "preservation." There are, however, some noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as "becoming more curious in discovering" instead of "about discovering," and spelling errors like "sorroundings." Furthermore, phrasing such as "unravel historical sites" demonstrates limitations in precise word collocation. These lexical slips do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily, but they restrict the score to this band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing or redundant articles, preposition errors such as "access to those records easily from anywhere," and occasional awkward phrasing like "As, we tend to get more information." Despite these frequent minor slips, the structures used do not obscure the meaning, and the reader can comprehend the points being made without major difficulty. This reflects a structure where complex sentences are attempted but often contain persistent, minor inaccuracies.
