Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying reasons why people research their house history and explaining research methods. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the second body paragraph offers an extended example about geology students in Bangladesh searching for mass graves, other points remain somewhat under-developed. For instance, the discussion of local district offices and older generations in the third paragraph is rather brief and could be further elaborated with concrete examples or clearer explanations. The position is generally clear throughout, and the 11 words copied from the prompt were not counted towards the student total length, though the response successfully meets the minimum word count requirement overall.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure containing an introduction, body paragraphs addressing the prompt questions, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally', 'For instance', and 'On the other hand', but referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For example, sentences like 'The citizens who are interested to research on this site can start their their data collection...' show some clunky transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas, but clearer logical progression within paragraphs would lift the response to the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'curiosity', 'traditions', and 'inhabitants'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'searching about' instead of 'researching', 'distirct' spelling errors, 'ancients events' instead of 'ancient events', 'accomodated places', and 'recorf' instead of 'record'. Additionally, there are minor typos and repetitions like 'start their their data collection'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations cause some occasional difficulty for the reader without completely impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at structures like relative clauses ('who are now researching') and conditional ideas. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly concerning articles ('In few countries', 'the history'), prepositions ('research on this site' instead of 'into'), plurals and agreement ('a great numbers', 'details records'), and word forms. For instance, the final sentence of the essay trails off incomplete ('district offices built by government for regions are also helpful for this researc'). While these errors are noticeable, meaning is generally decipherable, placing the grammatical control at this level.
