Student answer (Band 5.0)
it is no news that there is a trend of people investigating the history of the house they live in for reasons best known to them and often about their own safety. However, in this essay, we will analyse how people can research this but the thrust of this essay will be focused on why people do this with supporting examples from my experience to drive home my message.
it is imperative to note that people choose to investigate history of the house they live in for myriads reasons. The most common of these reasons is safety issues. In order to ensure once security, people often ask whether the building have ever been robbed or is prone to petty or classified stealing because no one will want to be robbed or killed by assasins. again, no one will want to waste their funds or rent on a house that is often flooded or badly located so in order not to just avoid waste of once finance but to protect life and properties, people tend to investigate whether the house they live in or will want to live in is predisposed to flood. In nigeria for instance, these are often reasons why people are interested in out about the history of their house so as not to be victims of flood after the great 2011 flood that Nigeria experienced that have come to stay with us with barely any plan to curb with the situation.
it is pertinent also to have at the back of our mind that in going about this, we should apply knowledge and caution. this is because it is imperative to keep this investigation low so as not to be major targets again, we should apply caution so as to ascertain the true history of a place as people tend not to give true information if they get to realise you are investigating whether to live there or not. very importantly is spurring our government to not just tighten security but also come up with ways of curbing with climate and environmental change.
in conclusion investigating about a place to live or where one is currently living is not just sacrosant but should be encouraged and even if possible drawing authourities attention to curb with the situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt only partially, which aligns with a lower intermediate level of task achievement. While the writer attempts to discuss both reasons why people investigate house histories and how they can research them, the treatment of these ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on safety and flooding in Nigeria is introduced, but it lacks sufficient depth and clear supporting examples from personal experience beyond a brief mention of the 2011 flood. Furthermore, the second part of the prompt concerning research methods is insufficiently addressed, with vague recommendations like keeping the investigation 'low' rather than explaining practical research steps like consulting archives, land registries, or architectural records. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully extend both parts of the prompt with well-developed, clear ideas and specific examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay displays some basic organization, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but capitalization is notably missing at the start of sentences, such as 'it is no news' and 'it is imperative', which weakens the visual and structural cohesion of the text. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, and referencing within the text can be unclear, leading to a choppy flow of ideas. For example, the transition between discussing safety issues and moving into research methods lacks a smooth logical bridge. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should ensure standard capitalization rules are followed, employ a wider and more accurate range of transitional phrases, and clearly structure each paragraph around a distinct, logically sequenced sub-topic.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating basic points despite noticeable lexical shortcomings. There are several instances of awkward word choices and phrasing, such as 'classified stealing' instead of petty theft, and 'curb with the situation' instead of cope with or address the situation. Additionally, lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences and proper nouns, such as 'nigeria', indicate minor spelling and mechanical oversights. Although the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general message, errors in word choice and collocation cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate less common lexical items accurately and refine collocations to sound more natural and academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Grammatically, the response uses a very limited range of structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in punctuation and sentence boundaries, notably the complete absence of capital letters at the beginning of sentences throughout the entire text, and missing spaces after punctuation marks, such as 'issues. In order'. Subject-verb agreement and article usage also show frequent errors, as seen in phrases like 'whether the building have ever been robbed' and 'avoid waste of once finance'. These frequent errors in grammar and mechanics cause noticeable difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer must focus on foundational grammatical accuracy, correct punctuation rules, subject-verb agreement, and building better control over complex sentence patterns.
