Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the reasons why people research their homes and how they can do so. The main ideas are relevant, such as curiosity about historic buildings like Shakespeare's house and safety evaluations, which satisfies the requirements for the mid-level band. However, some ideas remain under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the safety aspect is introduced but lacks sufficient explanation or a concrete example to show how an old building's structure is assessed. To move higher, all points need equal depth, with clear supporting arguments and examples thoroughly unpacked across the entire essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from reasons in the second paragraph to research methods in the third. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the distinct parts of the prompt effectively. Cohesive devices are generally present, using terms like 'Additionally', 'There are different ways', and 'Furhtermore' to link ideas. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical rather than fluid. To reach a higher band, the writer should ensure that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow more naturally without relying on formulaic connectors, and referencing words like 'this' or 'these' should consistently point to precise antecedents to avoid slight ambiguities.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items such as 'inhabitants', 'ascertain', and 'archives'. However, the vocabulary is hindered by frequent spelling errors, including 'evermore', 'becaue', 'centureis', 'Shakespear', 'build' instead of 'built', 'age' instead of 'ago', 'Housed', 'municiple', 'obtaiend', 'Furhtermore', 'possess', 'condtruction', and 'elighten'. There are also minor word choice inaccuracies, such as 'residential houses and buildings' where a more natural collocation would be 'historic properties'. These errors are noticeable but generally do not impede overall communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand the range of precise vocabulary and improve spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate clauses, such as 'A lot of even the most modern towns are few centureis old, which creates a fascination...'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including the initial fragment 'Nowadays. people...', article omissions like 'the homes ownership', and subject-verb agreement issues such as 'construction worker possess'. Despite these issues, the errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer must produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences when utilizing complex grammatical structures and pay closer attention to punctuation and articles.
