Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, an increasing number of people are curious about the history of the houses or building in which they live. This essay will discuss the main reason for this interest and explain how people can investigate the past of their property.

One major reason is that people want to understand their family and local history. An old house may have been owned by different families or may have played an important role in the community. Learning about these details can give residents a stronger connection with their home and their local area. Another reason is that people may want to know the age and orignal purpose of their property. A compelling example of this can be seen in, an old building might have been a shop, school, farmhouse before it became a house.

There are several effective ways to reserch this information. Firstly, people can search online because many websites provide old maps, photographs and historical records. Secondly, they can visit local libraries, museums or government offices to find property documents and information about previous owners. Talking to elderly neighbours can also be useful, as they may remember important events or changes in the area. In addition, property deeds and newspapers can provide valuable evidence about building's past.

In conclusion, people are interested in the history of their homes mainly because they want to understand their roots and learn more about their property. Online resources , offical records , libraries and local residents can all help them to discover this information

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the reasons why people are interested in the history of their homes and how they can research this information. For example, you appropriately point out that residents want to understand family history and local heritage, and you suggest practical research methods such as checking online archives and visiting local libraries. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which places the response securely at the present level. While the research methods are well supported with multiple specific examples like talking to elderly neighbours, the reasons section contains some under-developed points that lack extension. For instance, the mention of property age and original purpose in the second paragraph is introduced but not fully explained. To reach a higher standard, every main idea introduced should be extended with clearer explanations or concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical structure that guides the reader naturally from the introduction to the body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, with the first body paragraph addressing reasons and the second outlining research methods. You make use of standard cohesive devices and sequencing markers such as 'One major reason', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to connect your ideas. However, the cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or formulaic, and some referencing and punctuation slips occur, such as spacing issues around commas in the final paragraph. To advance further, you need to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions between sentences are entirely natural and unobtrusive rather than relying on standard list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your ideas about property history and research methods. You make successful attempts at less common vocabulary items such as 'compelling example', 'historical records', and 'property deeds'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'building' instead of 'buildings' in the phrase 'building's past', 'reserch' instead of 'research', 'orignal' instead of 'original', and punctuation spacing errors like 'resources , offical records'. These minor slips show that your lexical control is not yet fully consistent. To achieve a higher band, you should expand your range of less common lexical items, ensure absolute precision in spelling, and demonstrate a stronger command of word choice and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response, successfully using relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'houses or building in which they live' and 'before it became a house'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of minor inaccuracies include singular and plural noun agreement errors like 'houses or building' instead of 'houses or buildings', and a minor comma splice or awkward phrasing in 'seen in, an old building'. To move to the next level, you should aim to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences, maintain tighter control over subject-verb agreement and article usage, and ensure punctuation is polished throughout.
