Student answer (Band 6.0)

In several countries, a significant amount of individuals are starting to become fascinated about the history of a house or a particular building they live in. This essay will discuss the main reasons behind this trend and then also examine the methods people can use to research their homes.

It is quite frequent that residents are naturally curious about the history and the origin of everyday things. One key reason for this trend is that since a home is essentially where people spend a majority of their time, it is only natural that they are interested in determining the events that took place among the walls. Furthermore, discovering that the house or the apartment once belonged to a notable figure or essentially survived a major historical war, it gives them extra pride and a stronger sense of connection with the place. Moreover, an ancient apartment may have notable exterior or interior signs that actively strikes a person's curiosity towards researching about the establishment. For example, if a person unexpectedly discovers a very unique symbol engraved in a part of the house's wall, consequently it pushes the person to delve deeper into the apartment's history to determine the symbol's origin.

Moving on with the question on how this can be researched, there are several approaches. Today, technology gives people access to a vast range of resources, so they can easily explore the origins of certain specific locations online, for example through digitised property records or local history websites. Furthermore, people can consider reading old historical books of a specific country, better still, a specific area where they reside in. This approach makes it a lot more easier to determine the historical origins of the house. For instance, if a person belonging to Germany wanted to research about their house in the capital city, they could potentially read a history book about the country.

In conclusion, the idea of researching about the history of the house and apartments people live in, purely rises from their internal though process and curiosity. Several factors have contributed to this growing trend, such as natural curiosity or emotional connection such as pride or excitement with a historically known premise. There are many researching techniques, such as reading historical books or search through the internet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the reasons for researching a home's history and the methods used to do so. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is typical of this level. For instance, the reasons behind this trend are well explored with points about emotional connection and curiosity, supported by examples such as discovering engraved symbols. On the other hand, the explanation of research methods is somewhat general and could have been extended with deeper elaboration. The position remains clear throughout the essay, and the main tenets of the task are adequately covered, fulfilling the criteria for this band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct sections for reasons and methods. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Moving on with the question', though some transitional links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their positioning. Referencing is generally clear throughout the text, and while cohesion could be more subtle and flexible to reach higher bands, the current level of organization successfully guides the reader through the arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'fascinated', 'tangible', 'engraved', and 'digitised property records'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'a significant amount of individuals' instead of 'number', or stating that people research 'a historical known premise' rather than 'premise' or 'building'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the intended meaning without confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, such as conditional structures with 'if a person unexpectedly discovers'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including minor prepositional issues ('researching about') and comparative phrasing ('a lot more easier'), but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning. The majority of simple sentences are accurate, and punctuation is generally handled well enough to support the flow of ideas without causing difficulty for the reader.
