Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the main parts of the task by identifying reasons why people research their building's history and outlining research methods, but the ideas are limited and under-developed. For example, the reason regarding criminal activity and ghosts is expressed rather generally and repetitively, lacking strong elaboration. The student attempts to present a position and structure, but the development of ideas remains superficial throughout the essay, characteristic of a response that addresses the task only partially with limited supporting examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response exhibits some overall organization with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, fitting a coherent overall arrangement. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. Phrases like 'TO COMMENCE WITH' and 'FOR RESEARCH PURPOUSE' are used to signal transitions, but the logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally hindered by repetitive phrasing and unclear referencing, such as 'THE MAIN OF THE REASON IS THAT, THE PERSONS WHO LIVED IN THAT HOUSE THEY FOUND SOME SOMETHING ABNORMAL ACTIVITY'. Paragraphing is present, though the internal flow requires smoother connections.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'VERIFICATION' and 'GOVERNMENT BODIES', but noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling occur frequently throughout the text, including 'PURPOUSE', 'AVAIALBLE', 'DICRECTY', 'OFLLIND', and 'RECCOMANED'. These errors and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a basic control of lexical features.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The student uses a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses and faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'THE HISTORY ABOUT THEIR HOME OR APARTMENT WHERE THEY LIVED', 'IT WAS INVOLVE', and 'PEOPLE SOMTIME FINDING ABNORMAL THINGS'. These frequent errors frequently impede smooth reading and cause difficulty for the reader, matching the descriptor for this level of grammatical accuracy.
