Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining both the reasons behind people's interest in their home's history and the methods used to research it, showing features of the higher band. Ideas such as personal connections and historical significance are presented alongside research avenues like the internet and local archives. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others, which keeps the score at this level. For instance, the discussion on research methods is supported by examples like checking online databases and visiting museums, whereas the historical significance point relies heavily on a generalisation about Lahore and ruins in backyards rather than deeper elaboration. To reach the next level, all main ideas would need to be equally extended and supported throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear staging of ideas across introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, successfully meeting the core requirements of this level and hinting at better organisational traits. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate reasons from research methods. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as using 'For example' and 'An alternative and better way should be to', which aids progression. Nevertheless, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as in the abrupt transitions between sentences in the second body paragraph. To improve further, the writer needs to ensure smoother logical bridges between sentences and a more flexible, less repetitive use of cohesive markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main points despite notable limitations in range. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'historically significant', 'archives', and 'politician', but these are accompanied by frequent spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'becming', 'resaons', 'conection', 'naurally', 'aritcals', 'ammount', and 'fomous'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not severely impede overall communication, but they restrict the precision and flexibility of the language. To achieve a higher score, the student must expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and demonstrate better control over word choices and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses ('museums that might have more information', 'the house in which he lived'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('city of Lahore', 'on internet'), incorrect preposition use ('in to know about history'), and occasional subject-verb agreement issues ('many the museum have'). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning of sentences usually remains clear. To progress to the next level, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles, plurals, and basic grammatical patterns.
