Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, fulfilling the requirement of meeting the minimum length (excluding 12 words copied directly from the prompt). The writer attempts to cover both parts of the prompt regarding reasons and methods of research, but the ideas are limited and under-developed. For example, the reasons are somewhat superficial, stating broadly that people are curious about their origin and identity without deep elaboration. The position in the essay is not always clear, and the conclusion mentions topics not fully aligned with the core question. To move to a higher band, the writer must ensure all parts of the prompt are fully developed with clear, relevant explanations and fully supported examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the essay, with paragraphs used to separate different points, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent use of phrases like 'Now a days' and 'In my point of view'. Referencing is also unclear at times, making the logical transitions between sentences difficult to follow smoothly. For instance, the transition from discussing research methods to the personal anecdote about a village man feels abrupt and lacks clear cohesive links. To improve, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices accurately and ensure each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one with clear overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary range is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'severale amount', 'became curious', 'cruticial', 'neibour', 'reasearch', 'inlcuding', and 'returend'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts often contain inaccuracies. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, pay closer attention to word formation and spelling, and use vocabulary with greater precision and awareness of collocation, ensuring that errors do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at more complex structures are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text, such as 'people are became curious', 'you dont know', 'Do not searching', 'play a vital sign', and 'he get the information where his family living now'. These errors cause frequent difficulty for the reader. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors, and improve sentence-level accuracy.
