Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing reasons why people research their building's history and how they can do so, yet the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the reason concerning safety is introduced, but the supporting example regarding a rental flat in Sri Lanka is somewhat tangential and poorly integrated to fully support the main argument. The position is discernible, but the overall development lacks depth and a clear, well-supported progression of ideas. To move to a higher band, the essay needs to fully extend its ideas with more robust, directly relevant examples and explanations for both parts of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic logical structure and some attempt at organisation, dividing the response into an introduction, body paragraphs for reasons and methods, and a conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression across the text. Cohesive devices are used repetitively or inaccurately, such as 'One the other hand' and transitional phrases that feel mechanical rather than natural. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is frequently faulty, making the flow somewhat disjointed. Enhancing the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs would improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling throughout the response, such as 'disuss', 'whay', 'buliding', 'tracks' instead of cracks, and 'rentout'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with frequent inaccuracies that occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their lexical range beyond basic terms, demonstrate better control over word formation and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside poorly controlled attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, as seen in phrases like 'which they are lived', 'most of the individuals are live', and 'throughout the internet'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and distraction for the reader. Incorporating a wider mix of error-free complex structures and sharpening basic grammatical accuracy will be essential for reaching the next level.
