What are the reasons for this?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people are more interested in finding out about the past of the house or building they live in. People want to feel connected to their neighborhood where they live. They can research their homes by searching the public records or talking to the public.

They do these because of mainly two reasons. Firstly, they are naturally curious; they wanted to know who lived in the house before long ago and what happened in the past. Knowing something special happened makes them feel connected to the house where they live. Secondly, there are many people in the world who have to change their locality for the work; they want to know the heritage of the house and to stay connected to the community.

People can research their homes by finding their records with the government officials. These include land papers, old maps, and record censuses; these will help them to know who constructed the house and who was the owner of the house. Knowing the past and what happened there will help them know about the house history. The house owner can easily talk to the local neighbors who have lived in the area for a long time; they can tell what special things happened to the house in the past. They can simply share the old photographs, which cannot be found in the official government records.

In conclusion, people want to know the heritage of the house where they live and feel connected to the community. They can do this by searching records or by talking to the old neighbors who lived for longtime ago.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying reasons why people research their homes and explaining methods for doing so. A few words copied directly from the prompt were not counted. The ideas presented are relevant, but some are more fully developed than others. For instance, the reasons given in the second paragraph, such as natural curiosity and moving for work, remain somewhat generalized and lack extended supporting examples. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to expand on these ideas with deeper explanations and concrete examples to ensure all parts of the prompt are explored with equal depth and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear organizational structure, using paragraphing to separate the introduction, reasons, methods, and conclusion. However, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases and repeated sentence openings. Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, which disrupts the natural flow of ideas. To achieve a higher band, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions between sentences and paragraphs feel smoother and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main points. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'heritage,' 'locality,' and 'public records,' but this is accompanied by some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, like 'record censuses' instead of 'census records' or 'talking to the public' instead of 'speaking with locals.' Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary remains somewhat limited. To reach the next level, the writer should incorporate a broader range of precise, sophisticated lexical items and demonstrate better control over natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and conditional ideas. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as tense inconsistencies (e.g., 'they wanted to know' instead of 'they want to know') and slight issues with article usage or prepositional phrases. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To improve, the writer should aim for greater control over complex sentence patterns and reduce the frequency of minor structural and tense errors to achieve a higher proportion of error-free sentences.
