Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries, with the passing time, more and more people are investing their energy in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in.

I think one of the main reasons is the curiousity. People are curious to know the historical information on the building they live in. Since, in some countries the houses are very old and many families have lived in one house before moving to a new place. So people are interested in knowing about when the house was made, how many families lived there before, the number of times the house was reconstructed. They want to know about all the details of how the house was made, its location and its significance.

People can do research on this with various methods like studying about the house, asking the house owner, asking the people who have lived there before, approaching broker and reaching out to someone who can provide them with the right information. The house owner can give them all the information they need and provide them answers for all their questions. For instance, if a person in living in some place he would at some point definitely want to know about the architecture of house and the details of the house. How many people lived there before. In which year it was constructed and how many times it was reconstructed. They would want to know about the significance of the place. People also become curious about the neighbourhood of the place. All these information can only be obtained by who knows that place too well and has lived long enough to answer all the questions

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the reasons why people are interested in the history of their homes and how they can conduct research. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, which keeps the response at this level. For instance, the reason provided for this interest is primarily reduced to simple 'curiosity,' and the explanation tends to repeat similar points, such as asking how many times the house was reconstructed and how many people lived there. Similarly, the methods of research are listed rather than fully extended. While the prompt instructions were met and 14 words copied from the prompt were correctly excluded from the count, the support for the main ideas lacks depth and specific examples from the writer's own knowledge or experience are missing or generalized.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response displays some organization, but there is a lack of clear overall progression. The paragraphing is problematic; the second paragraph is excessively long and crams multiple ideas together—shifting abruptly from reasons to research methods without a clear transitional structure. Furthermore, the use of cohesive devices is repetitive and at times inadequate, with sentences often beginning with similar structures like 'People are curious...' or 'They want to know...'. Pronoun referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as shifting between singular and plural references ('a person in living in some place... They would want...'). To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to logically segment the text into distinct paragraphs for each part of the prompt and use a wider variety of cohesive ties to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some topic-specific terms like 'architecture,' 'reconstructed,' and 'significance,' but there is noticeable repetition of basic words and phrases throughout the response, such as 'house,' 'building,' 'know,' and 'history.' There are also a few word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as misspelling 'curiousity' and using awkward phrasing like 'approaching broker' where an article or plural form is missing. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic message, but the lack of precise less common lexical items and the frequent repetition prevent it from reaching a higher standard.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying heavily on simple sentences or repetitive complex patterns. When the writer attempts more complex sentences, errors become frequent and can cause some difficulty for the reader. There are notable grammatical issues throughout the text, including fragment sentences ('Since, in some countries the houses are very old...'), preposition errors ('in living in some place'), missing articles ('architecture of house'), and subject-verb agreement or tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is also weak in places, with comma splices or unnecessary breaks. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex grammatical structures and carefully check for basic punctuation and article usage.
