Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies one plausible reason for researching a home’s history: an emotional connection and a desire to feel attached to a place. However, this idea is only briefly stated, and the examples about Pakistan, the USA and London are unclear. The response does not explain how people can research a building’s past, so a major part of the question is unanswered. It also ends mid-thought after “some people visited some places,” leaving the discussion incomplete. The required minimum length is not met, which contributes to the very limited development. To improve, address both questions directly, explain each reason, and include practical research methods such as checking public records, archives or speaking with previous residents.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.0
There is a basic attempt to connect ideas: the opening introduces the trend, and “such as” appears to introduce examples. However, the response is too brief and unfinished to establish a clear progression from reasons to research methods. The sequence “people feel more attached to place when the knoew live ther before” is difficult to follow, and the final phrase, “and,” leaves the sentence incomplete. There is no paragraphing to distinguish the two parts of the task, and the repeated use of “people” does little to guide the reader. Organise the response into an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, and a paragraph on research methods, using clear links between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few relevant expressions, including “growing trend,” “personal reason” and “emotional connection,” which show an attempt to discuss the topic. However, the range is narrow, and several spelling errors make the wording difficult to understand, including “Nowdays,” “knoe,” “buldings,” “emmotional” and “attrected.” Some phrases are also imprecise, such as “these people more attracted with they lived before,” which does not clearly express the intended idea. Build a more accurate topic vocabulary for historical research and attachment to a home, and check spelling carefully. Useful terms could include “previous occupants,” “property records” and “local archives.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a longer sentence to explain why people feel connected to a place, but grammatical control is limited. For example, “there is a growing trend of people want to know” needs a grammatical pattern such as “a growing trend of people wanting to know” or “people are increasingly interested in learning.” In “people feel more attached to place when the know live there before,” the clause structure and verb forms do not clearly express the intended meaning. Sentence boundaries and capitalisation are also inconsistent, as in the lowercase “people” after a full stop, and the final sentence is incomplete. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses using “because,” “when” and “which.”
