Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many countries, there is a growing interest in the discovering the history of the building where people resides. This essay will discuss the reasons for this trend and the methods people can use to find such information.

There are several reasons why people want to know the history of their house. Firstly, it is due to natural curiosty and a desire of sense belonging. Knowing who lived in a house before, or what happened there, can make people feel more connected to their home. Secondly, some houses have historical or financial value. An old building might be a heritage property. which could increase its price or require special renovation permission. For example, in the UK, people are more interested in their history to maintain them properly. Finally, TV shows about history and architecture have made this topic more popular.

People can research the history of their homes in various ways. The most common method is to search online. Many property records, old maps, and the census date are now available on the internet. another effective way is to visit the local authorities, such as municiple office or local library, where land registery documents are kept. In my country pakistan, people often go to the Patwari office to check old records. Additionally, taking to elderly neighbours can be very useful, as they often have valuable information and stories about the area that are not written anymore.

In conclusion, people are interested in the history of their houses because of the curiosity and the practical reason like property value. They can conduct this research through online resources, official records and the local community methods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both questions clearly: it gives reasons for interest in a building’s past and outlines online, official-record, and community-based research. The explanations of curiosity and belonging are supported by the example of learning who lived in a house, while heritage status and possible effects on value add a practical reason. The reference to Pakistan’s Patwari office also makes the research methods specific. Some points are less fully developed than others: the mention of television programmes is brief, and the UK example about maintaining heritage properties could explain more directly how this motivates research. Overall, the ideas are relevant and supported, but a little more explanation of these points would make the response more consistently developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction identifies both parts of the task, separate body paragraphs discuss reasons and research methods, and the conclusion summarises the main points. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposting such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Finally,” and “Additionally” helps readers follow the sequence. The examples are placed alongside the points they support. Cohesion is not always fully smooth, however: the transition from the UK example to television programmes is abrupt, and the conclusion’s phrase “local community methods” is less clear than the earlier reference to neighbours. Some linking relies on a repeated list structure. More varied transitions and clearer references between sentences would make the progression feel more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “historical or financial value,” “heritage property,” “property records,” and “valuable information.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and terms such as “Patwari office” add useful specificity. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice errors that limit precision, including “curiosty,” “census date,” “municiple,” and “land registery.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “a desire of sense belonging” and “the local community methods.” Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for discussing property research. More accurate phrasing would help the vocabulary already attempted sound more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as “Knowing who lived in a house before, or what happened there, can make people feel more connected to their home” and the relative clause “where land registery documents are kept.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “the building where people resides” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “a desire of sense belonging” has an inaccurate grammatical construction. The sentence beginning “An old building might be a heritage property” is incorrectly joined to the following clause with a full stop, and “another effective way” needs a capital letter after the preceding full stop. Review agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures.
