Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions: it gives reasons for interest in a home’s past, including curiosity, emotional attachment, practical concerns when buying or renovating, and personal identity, then suggests asking neighbours or former owners and consulting public records and libraries. These ideas are relevant and the conclusion restates the main points. However, some are less fully explained than others. The example about someone living in the same home for 40 years is difficult to follow, and the practical value of historical information is asserted rather than clearly illustrated. The research section is also brief, with online resources mentioned only in the conclusion. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation or example, and explain how each research method can reveal the building’s history.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, a paragraph on research methods, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main stages. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. For example, “However” does not express a clear contrast in the sentence about long-term residents, while the shift from curiosity to emotional attachment is not smoothly explained. The reference to “they” in the conclusion could also be clearer. Use linking expressions that show the precise relationship between ideas, and connect examples directly to the point they support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “public records,” “local residents,” “structural problems,” and “personal identity.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both historical research and practical reasons for investigating a property. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, sometimes making the intended meaning less clear. Examples include “history housing,” “perfect their properties,” and “enjoy discovery with their parents.” There are also spelling errors such as “beacuse,” “Anoy=ther,” and “pratical.” Aim for more natural phrases and check spelling carefully; precise expressions such as “renovate a property” and “uncover the home’s past” would make the discussion clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more developed sentence forms, including a conditional example beginning “if the house is very old” and a relative clause in “where all documents… may be available.” However, control of sentence structure and basic grammar is uneven. For instance, “This is mainly about they understand the past” has an incorrect clause structure, and “the person were living” shows a subject–verb agreement problem. Articles and prepositions are also unreliable, as in “in home since 40 years in same home.” Some sentences are difficult to interpret because several clauses are joined without clear grammatical relationships. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, then check agreement, articles, and tense.
