Nowadays more and more people are interested in learning about the history of the houses or buildings in which they live. There are several reasons for this growing interest, and people can use different methods to find this information. Thetre are two main reasons why people want to know about the history of their homes. Firstly, they are curious about the past. They want to disover who lived in their houses before them and how the buildings were used. This can help them understand the history of their local area and feel more connected to it. Secondly, people are may want to check the condition and value of their properties. For example, an old house may have historical importance, or it may have renovated several times. There are several ways to research the history of a house or building. One useful method is to check official records. Local government officesmay have documents showing when a building was constructed and who owned it in the past. In addition, people can visit libraries to find old maps, photographs and newspapers. Another effective methoid is to speak to older residents prevous owner. THey may remember important events or changes that took plce in the building. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it gives reasons for people’s interest and outlines several research methods. Curiosity about previous occupants and a wish to understand the local area are relevant, as are checking official records, libraries, speaking with older residents, and using the internet. The examples help make the methods concrete. However, some ideas are less fully explained than others. The point about checking a property’s condition and value is introduced but not clearly connected to researching its history, and the example about renovation is not developed. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how historical information helps with property decisions and extend one or two examples to show what people might discover and why it matters.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, a paragraph on research methods, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “In addition,” and “To sum up” help readers recognise the stages of the argument. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger progression. However, the linking is sometimes mechanical, with several points introduced in a list-like way, and the example about an elderly neighbour is not smoothly integrated into the sentence around it. The conclusion also repeats the main points rather than drawing them together. Use clearer referencing and vary transitions so relationships between ideas are explicit without relying mainly on formulaic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for explaining the topic, and phrases such as “official records,” “historical importance,” “old maps,” and “previous owner” are relevant and generally clear. There is also some useful variety in describing research methods. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “disover,” “methoid,” “prevous,” and “orininally,” which reduce the accuracy and polish of the writing. Some expressions are also imprecise, such as “check the condition and value” and “discover these information.” Aim to proofread carefully and choose more precise collocations, for example, explain how records can establish a building’s age, ownership, or former use. This would make the vocabulary more controlled while retaining the clear, accessible style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including relative clauses in “the buildings in which I live” and subordinate clauses such as “because they want to understand the past.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the paragraph structure supports the meaning. Some grammatical errors nevertheless occur. For example, “people are may want” has an incorrect verb construction, while “a house was built few decades ago” needs an article, and “an elderly neighbour explain” lacks the appropriate verb form. The phrase “who lived in their houses before them” shows an attempt at a more complex structure, but accuracy is uneven. Review modal verbs, articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries, then check each sentence for a complete and correctly formed verb phrase.
