Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response makes a limited attempt to address both questions, but the reasons and research methods are not explained clearly enough. The idea that residents may want to check whether a previous owner had a “crime record” is relevant, yet it is not developed, and the second reason is replaced by general claims about quality of life and future opportunities. For research, asking neighbours and previous owners is mentioned, but the explanation is unclear and no other practical methods are given. The conclusion does not summarise a clear answer to either question. The response is also 7 words below the 250-word minimum; the 20 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop relevant reasons and explain specific research sources, such as local archives or property records.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposting such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” gives it a recognisable structure. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the paragraphs do not consistently develop the task questions. The contrastive “On the other hand” suggests a discussion of opposing views, although the task asks for reasons and research methods. Several linking phrases, including “Furthermore” and “Moreover,” introduce ideas that are vague or disconnected from the point before them. The conclusion also shifts to “both sides” without establishing what those sides are. Organise the body around the two questions and use links that show the actual relationship between each idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
There is some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “house history,” “previous owner,” and “neighbours,” and the response attempts more formal expressions such as “quality of life” and “in the long term.” However, much of the wording is generic or inaccurately chosen, which makes ideas unclear: “find our house history” and “this is save for everyone” do not express precise meanings. Spelling errors such as “eassy,” “thay,” and “eassy” (intended as “easy”) also reduce accuracy, while repeated phrases such as “important factor” limit range. Aim for precise topic vocabulary and check spelling and collocations. For example, “research a property’s history” is clearer than “find our house history.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts some longer sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “as,” and “although,” and uses basic sentence patterns to organise points. However, control is inconsistent, and errors often make the intended meaning hard to follow. Examples include “This issue has raised a several question,” “People knows,” and “the before hai old owner,” which show problems with articles, agreement and sentence construction. Punctuation and spacing are also unreliable, as in “ways. This” and “question .” The final sentence beginning “although there are different views about…” is not formed clearly. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then build longer sentences with one clear main clause and correctly connected supporting clauses.
