Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent days, increased proportion of people are interested in finding out the history of their living space. Homeowners or renters are increasingly becoming conscious about the foundation of home and previous accidents. These informations can be researched through surverying neighbours, previous home owners, builders or local police station.

There are primarily two reasons for increseasing curiosity of residents to know about their house or appartment. First is to find out the strength of the house they live in. The base foundation and the building materials which had been used while the construction, determine the strength of the whole building. For example, atter the 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit in Nepal in 2016, the new building are constructed to withstand such large earthquakes and the recent buyers are searching for high strength homes which were built on high number of steel meshing on concrete. Another reason is to know about the mishaps that might have occurred beforehand. For insance, in Japan, houses, appartments and rooms are sold cheap if there had been suicide inside the boundary. So people want to buy a safe palce for them to stay.

Regarding the research, people can find out about their palce, where they stay, through several mechanisms. Straightforwardly, people can ask the previous home owners or selling agency about the building materials and foundation. By utilizing engineering drawings and municipality documents, they can easily find out the strength and building materials of the house. Moreover, asking the neighbours and local police station can clearly point out the accidents of the past.

In general, it is essential to have curiosity in researching about the strength and past accidents of the house where they live in. Engineering drawings, municipality and police reports are important to convey information about the strength and surveying with neighbours and previous owner is beneficial in collecting information about previous accidents that might have happened in thier living space.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both questions directly and maintains a clear focus on why residents investigate a property’s past and how they can do so. The two reasons—checking structural safety and learning about previous accidents—are relevant, and the Nepal earthquake and Japanese property example help illustrate them. The research methods are also specific, including asking former owners, consulting engineering drawings and municipal records, and speaking with neighbours or police. This clear coverage and supporting detail fit the descriptor. To strengthen the response further, explain the examples and their connection to people’s curiosity more precisely; for instance, the earthquake example shifts from researching a particular home’s history to choosing newly built homes. The conclusion mainly repeats earlier points rather than adding a final insight.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, one on research methods, and a conclusion. The progression from reasons to practical ways of investigating is easy to follow, and signposts such as “First,” “Another reason,” and “Regarding the research” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, several transitions feel formulaic, and the conclusion repeats the body’s points rather than synthesising them. Some references are also unclear or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “the house where they live” and “their living space.” Use more varied referencing and connect examples more explicitly to the main point of each paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “foundation,” “building materials,” “engineering drawings,” and “municipality documents.” These terms allow the reader to understand the main ideas, but the range and control are limited by repeated general wording and noticeable spelling and word-choice errors. Examples include “increseasing,” “surverying,” “appartment,” and “palce”; “these informations” is also an inaccurate form. Some phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “high number of steel meshing on concrete” and “curiosity in researching about.” Aim for accurate collocations and more precise phrasing, such as describing a building’s structural integrity or checking its construction records. Proofreading spelling and word forms would make the vocabulary more reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is some variety in sentence structure, including complex clauses such as “The base foundation and the building materials which had been used while the construction, determine the strength of the whole building.” The response is generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven, and errors recur in both simple and more complex sentences. For example, “In recent days, increased proportion of people are interested” has problems with the article and sentence construction, while “the new building are constructed” shows subject–verb disagreement. The clause about materials also has an awkward relative construction and punctuation. Work on articles, agreement, and forming subordinate clauses accurately; then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb. More consistently accurate sentence patterns would improve readability.
