Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response makes a limited attempt to address the topic, but it largely discusses visiting historical places rather than explaining why residents want to learn about the history of their own homes and how they can research it. The opening mentions interest in a building’s history, yet the body shifts to seeing historic sites, learning about wars and culture, and visiting places in Pakistan. The personal example of a 100-year-old house is relevant, but it does not explain how its history was investigated. To develop the task more fully, give distinct reasons—such as curiosity, preserving family heritage, or checking a property’s past—and practical research methods, such as consulting land records, local archives, previous owners, or neighbours. The response meets the stated length requirement; the 18 words copied from the prompt were not counted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and some linking expressions such as “Also,” “Due to,” and “In conclusion.” However, the ideas are not arranged in a clear progression: the body paragraphs repeat the benefits of learning history and visiting historical places, while the question of how to research a home’s past is not developed. Some connections are unclear, for example, “Due to visit of different places they observe a different kind of things,” and the conclusion introduces the house example without linking it clearly to the earlier discussion. Plan one paragraph around reasons and another around research methods, then use clear topic sentences and references to connect each example to the main point.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate a general interest in history, using words such as “historical,” “information,” “culture,” and “forefathers.” However, the range is basic and repetitive, especially through repeated use of “historical places” and “gain information,” and several expressions are inaccurate or unclear. For instance, “the guidense tells about the hopes our forefathers” does not convey a clear meaning, and “searchout a new historical places” is not an appropriate expression for researching a building’s past. Spelling and word-form errors, including “guidense” and “abouut,” also reduce precision. Build vocabulary specific to the task—such as property records, former residents, archives, and architectural features—and use it in accurate collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response relies mainly on short, simple sentences, with limited evidence of controlled complex structures. Frequent errors in sentence formation and agreement sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “they think that it a source of information,” “the people goes every year,” and “They gives a lot of information.” There are also problems with articles, plurals and verb patterns, as in “a different kind of things” and “they have interested in history.” Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention too: “things. It” has no space, and “In conclusion, There” incorrectly capitalises the next word. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete sentence patterns first, then add a few well-controlled clauses explaining reasons and research methods.
