IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries, more and more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in.
What are the reasons for this?
How can people research this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
I agree with the view that more and more people in general take interest in the history of the house they own.
On the one hand, Some people hardly do any background checks of the building or home they want to stay if the price and the quality of the living is good . For them history doesn't matter as their key objective is to have ease of life that suffice their purpose of living.
On the other hand, People do research of the building or home they stay to make sure the money they have invested is on right property. There is also a psychological factor behind this which can be termed as mental satisfaction. Moreover in metropolitan city people are more concerned on the assets they invest. They consider it as long term investment so that return on investment is good when they shift to other place.
For instance when i bought by home , I did through research regarding the upcoming development of the city and its upcoming prospects which decide the future price of the building. This can be done by reading reviews online of the property and get updated on the district authority portal or by communicating with broker that shows you the property. One can also be referred from his friends and family
In conclusion , background checks are important if you prioritize your investment. Giving emphasis on this will give you a brief idea about the upcoming projects and development near by and provides you a mental satisfaction on your investments.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both questions to some extent: you suggest that people investigate a property to protect an investment and gain “mental satisfaction,” and you mention online reviews, district-authority information, brokers, and friends or family as research sources. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because the reasons are narrow and the research methods are not clearly focused on discovering a building’s history. Much of the discussion concerns future development and resale value rather than the property’s past. The opening also says “I agree with the view,” although the task asks for reasons and methods, not an opinion. Develop a wider range of relevant reasons and explain how sources such as archives, previous owners, or local records reveal a building’s history.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, contrasting body paragraphs, a personal example, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “Moreover,” and “For instance” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the contrast between people who do not check a property and those who do is not directly required by the prompt, and the example shifts from researching a building’s history to predicting its future price. The final paragraph repeats the investment and satisfaction points rather than bringing the two task questions together. Organise the body around the reasons for researching history and the practical research methods, using clearer links between each explanation and its example.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “background checks,” “investment,” “district authority portal,” and “upcoming development,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. There is also an attempt to use more formal expressions such as “long term investment” and “mental satisfaction.” However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, including “the quality of the living,” “ease of life that suffice their purpose,” and “communicating with broker that shows you the property.” Repetition of “building or home,” “investment,” and “upcoming” also limits the range. Choose vocabulary that specifically describes historical research, such as property records, archives, former residents, and local history, and check collocations so your meaning is more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more extended sentences, including the explanation beginning “They consider it as long term investment so that…” and the example introduced by “For instance.” Most ideas can be followed, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation sometimes make the relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “For them history doesn't matter as their key objective is to have ease of life that suffice their purpose of living” has an awkwardly constructed clause, while “One can also be referred from his friends and family” does not form a clear grammatical meaning. There are also inconsistent capital letters after sentence openings and missing or misplaced commas and full stops. Practise building complete, controlled sentences and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
