Student answer (Band 6.0)

Heritage and history have always fascinated the human mind. We have always been intrigued by the ways that we came to be, and what existed before us.It makes sense for people to feel intrigued about their apartments and houses in a similar way, especially since a lot of people live in very old buildings and houses. It also intrigues a lot of people to find what type of establishment was there before their apartment was build on that land; something that had to be destroyed in order for the current building or house to be made. This activity is also becoming a hobby for many people due to the acess to information we have today. 20 years ago it would take a lot of effort and exploration to get an idea of the history of someone's home; now history of previous establishments in one's home's location can also be determined.

As information becomes more accessble to us every day, it becomes possible for people to understand the history of their houses. Internet seems to be the best place to find out about the history of any place. Google earth can give actual visual data of the area of the apartment a few years ago if it isnt updated; older images can also be procured to get an idea of the locality from a few years ago. One of the best ways to understand about the history of the apartment would be to talk to older people who have been living in the area for some time. They would know regarding the history of the house, as well as the surroundings of the place. Checking out for some older shops and businesses in the locality would be helpful, as they usually would have witnessed the growth of the area from long ago. While living in a rented apartment, my mother came to find the age of the apartment through a local worker who irons people's clothes as a business. He had been living in the area for over 30 years and witnessed the construction of the apartment around 5 years after he moved in. Local businesses can always be a useful resource for finding local history.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions: it explains interest through curiosity about the past and the increased availability of information, then suggests online imagery, conversations with long-term residents, and local businesses as research sources. The personal example about the clothes-ironing worker gives the second part useful, relevant support. However, the reasons are less fully developed than the research methods. For instance, the point that people want to know what stood on the site before their home is built is introduced but not explored, and the claim that researching has become a hobby could be explained further. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation or example, and make the link between modern access to information and growing interest more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The two-paragraph structure gives the response a clear overall arrangement: the first paragraph focuses mainly on reasons, while the second explains research methods. Ideas generally progress logically, and the personal anecdote is placed appropriately after the discussion of local sources. Cohesion is sometimes repetitive or mechanical, however. Phrases such as “It also intrigues,” “As information becomes more accessible,” and repeated references to “the history” connect ideas, but do not always show the precise relationship between them. Some references are also vague, such as “they” in the discussion of older shops and businesses. Use a wider range of linking expressions and make pronoun references explicit to improve flow and clarity.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range for the topic, including “establishment,” “locality,” “procured,” and “witnessed the construction,” which help convey ideas about a building’s past. The writer also attempts more specific expressions such as “previous establishments” and “local history.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, though: “find what type of establishment was there” and “understand about the history” are not natural formulations. Spelling errors such as “acess,” “accessble,” and “build” (where “built” is intended) also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and proofread spelling; for example, use “discover what previously occupied the site” and “learn about the building’s history.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including the relative clause in “older people who have been living in the area” and the conditional construction “While living in a rented apartment.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. In “before their apartment was build,” the passive verb form should be “built”; “if it isnt updated” needs an apostrophe and clearer punctuation; and “talk to older people who have been living” would be more naturally expressed as “who have lived” in this context. There are also run-on sentence boundaries, notably where “us.It” joins two sentences without a space. Review verb forms, sentence boundaries, and punctuation while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
