Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both questions: it suggests curiosity about family history and property value as reasons, and identifies internet searches, land offices, photographs, and asking relatives as research methods. These are relevant points, but the explanations are often unclear or only briefly developed. For example, the claim that people may turn buildings into “a source of income” is not explained, and the 1971 example does not clearly show how researching a building’s history helps establish its value. The conclusion mentions “family history and net worth” but does not clearly summarise the reasons and methods. To strengthen the response, explain each reason with a direct link to the task and use a specific example that clearly illustrates it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is an identifiable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph about reasons, one about research methods, and a conclusion. This helps readers recognise the response’s main sections. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven, and some linking expressions are mechanical or do not show the relationship between ideas accurately. For instance, “To beginning with” and “First and foremost” introduce points, but the connection between family history, income, and property prices remains unclear. The sentence beginning “Because if they move” is also detached from the preceding idea. Use clearer topic sentences and organise each paragraph around one main point, then explain it before adding an example. More precise referencing would also help readers follow what “those places” and “it” refer to.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response attempts a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “ancestors,” “family trees,” “actual prices,” “government offices,” and “documents.” These choices show an effort to discuss both historical research and property records. However, the range is limited by frequent inaccurate word choice, spelling errors, and unnatural collocations, which sometimes make meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “estimate value” for property value, “desire date” for the date or information sought, and “net worth of buliding” for a building’s value. Several words are also repeatedly used in broad ways, such as “knowledge” and “things.” Build accuracy by learning common collocations for this topic and checking spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more extended sentences, including clauses introduced by “as” and “where.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and frequent errors in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction can make the message difficult to understand. For example, “they can able to research” should be “they can research” or “they are able to research,” while “some people are intersted” contains an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “Because if they move” is incomplete, and “Additionaly, take photos” lacks a clear subject. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check each clause for correct agreement and tense before adding further detail.
