Student answer (Band 6.0)

Finding out about the history of the house or building people live in has become more and more common in some countries. Curiosity, free time are some of the key factors that drive people to learn more about their household. Internet, local libraries are a few metholds people can use to research this.

Humans have always been a curious creature. They always want to learn more about the world and themselves. Wanting to learn more about the history has always been part of human nature. This same curiosity applies to their house and nowadays people have a lot more free time thanks to the invention of modern technologies. People can now spend a lot more time fulfilling their curiosity by learning about different things. Consequently many people spend this time to find out more about the history of their house or building. It always gives people satisfaction to know more about their surroundings.

internet is a great way to start to learn about the history of the general area. Unfortunately it doesn't usually give specific information about a particular house but it can provide us with leads. For example , it can guide us to a local library where we can find books containing history about the houses in the area. Talking to the locals is also a great way to learn about the history. They might have some interesting facts about the building since they have been living here for a while.

In conclusion, it is the curious nature of humans that persuades them to learn about the history of their living place and the locals are the best way to learn about it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions: it attributes interest to human curiosity and increased free time, then suggests using the internet, libraries and local residents. These are relevant reasons and research methods, and the examples about online leads and residents’ knowledge help explain the suggestions. However, the reasons are less fully developed than the research methods: the claim that modern technology gives people more free time is asserted rather than illustrated, and the conclusion focuses on curiosity and locals without drawing together all the methods discussed. To strengthen the response, explain more specifically what motivates people—for example, renovation plans, ownership history or local heritage—and show how each research source can answer a different question. The 10 words copied from the task prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph on research methods and a concluding statement. Ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “Consequently” and “For example” help show relationships. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The introduction lists “Curiosity, free time” and then methods in short fragments, while the conclusion says locals are “the best way” without explaining how this relates to the internet and library discussion. Referencing also becomes imprecise in “They might have some interesting facts” and “living here,” where the referents or viewpoint could be clearer. Use fuller transitions between the two main parts of the task and make the conclusion reflect the range of methods presented.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for communicating the main ideas, with relevant expressions such as “human nature,” “local library,” “specific information” and “interesting facts.” The writer also attempts topic-related phrasing, including “history of the general area” and “surroundings.” However, range and precision are uneven, and several choices or spelling errors reduce accuracy: “metholds” is misspelled, “household” does not naturally mean the building’s history, and “learn more about the history” is repeated. Capitalisation of “internet” is inconsistent. More precise collocations would make the discussion sound more controlled—for instance, distinguish a building’s previous owners from the history of its neighbourhood. Varying repeated words such as “learn” and “history” would also improve flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentences, including the relative clause in “thanks to the invention of modern technologies” and the conditional “They might have some interesting facts … since they have been living here for a while.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. The opening list, “Curiosity, free time are some of the key factors,” needs a more complete construction, and “Humans have always been a curious creature” has a subject–complement agreement problem. The sentence beginning “Wanting to learn more about the history” is a fragment. There are also punctuation and capitalisation issues, such as the comma after “For example” being separated by a space and “internet” beginning a sentence in lowercase. Check sentence completeness, agreement and sentence openings during revision.
