Student answer (Band 4.0)

In this rapidly changing world, history is a matter of a considerable debate. In few countries, number of people interested in history of their house or the building they are living in is increasing day by day. In this essay, I will explain reasons for this development and people can research about this by using internet or print media.

There are number of methods that people can use to research about history of their house. Most of the time, people living in historical house have papers of that house explaining its origin.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response makes a brief attempt to address both questions: it mentions possible reasons for interest in a building’s history and begins to suggest research methods, including the internet, print media, and documents kept by residents. However, neither part is meaningfully explained or supported, and the response ends before developing these points. The opening also promises to explain the reasons, but no reasons are actually given. The required minimum length is not met, which contributes to the very limited coverage of the task. To improve, explain several plausible motivations—such as curiosity about previous owners, heritage, or renovation—and describe practical research steps, with a relevant example for each.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic overall shape: an introduction identifies the topic, and a following paragraph turns to research methods. The signposting phrase “In this essay” also indicates the intended purpose. However, the progression is incomplete: the introduction announces reasons and research, but the body only briefly addresses research, leaving the first question unanswered and the second undeveloped. The paragraph contains only one supporting point, and the final sentence does not provide a conclusion or connect back to the task. Build a clear sequence with separate paragraphs for reasons and research methods, then use linking phrases and a short conclusion to show how the ideas relate.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “history,” “origin,” “historical house,” and “print media,” so the reader can identify the subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “a considerable debate.” However, the range is narrow, and several expressions are awkward or imprecise: “history is a matter of a considerable debate” does not clearly express the intended idea, while “research about this” is less natural than a more precise research collocation. Repetition of “house” and “history” also limits variety. Aim for accurate topic-specific phrases such as “property records,” “previous owners,” and “local archives,” and check collocations before using formal-sounding expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writing includes mostly understandable simple sentences and one attempt at a longer structure, such as “Most of the time, people living in historical house have papers of that house explaining its origin.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven. In “In few countries, number of people…,” articles are missing; “people interested in history of their house” also needs clearer article use. The phrase “the building they are living in is increasing” creates an awkward structure, and “There are number of methods” again lacks an article. Sentence patterns are repetitive, with little evidence of controlled complex structures. Practise article use and build accurate sentences with clauses explaining causes and research methods.
