Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses both questions: it gives possible reasons, such as curiosity about previous residents, family heritage and a building’s age or architectural style, and suggests research through neighbours, former owners, libraries, the internet, photographs and documents. These are relevant ideas, but they are mostly listed rather than explained or supported with a clear example. The opening and conclusion do not establish a clear, focused response, and some points are difficult to interpret—for example, the reference to people being “shocking because huge incidents” is unclear. To strengthen the answer, explain why one or two motivations matter and show how a specific research method could uncover a building’s history.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some organisation: the response begins with an introduction, moves to reasons, then research methods, and ends with a summary. However, progression within paragraphs is difficult to follow because several ideas are crowded together, and links such as “on the other hand” do not express a clear contrast. Repeated references to “many peoples” and “old property” make the writing feel repetitive, while unclear references such as “who one is owner” interrupt the flow. Use one paragraph for reasons and another for research, with each paragraph developing a small number of points in a logical order. Choose linking phrases for their precise meaning and use clear pronouns or nouns to connect ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response attempts relevant topic vocabulary, including “heritage,” “architectural style,” “previous owners,” “documents” and “historical.” This shows an effort to discuss the subject beyond very basic terms. However, the range is limited and errors in word choice, word form and spelling are noticeable, sometimes making meaning hard to understand: “curiousity,” “diffrent,” “the past ofabou,” and “the structure they survive in.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “research out the past” and “old pics.” Build accuracy by learning common collocations for researching a building’s history, and check spelling and word forms. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish motivations from research methods.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, but sentence structures are often faulty, and errors frequently make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “The reason for all purpose who's finding the past…” is not a complete, clear sentence, while “how many peoples are live” has problems with question structure and verb form. Subject–verb agreement and articles are also inconsistent, as in “some peoples are talk” and “the residence or structure the live in.” Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention: several ideas run together without clear stops. Practise writing accurate simple sentences first, then combine related points using a controlled range of clauses.
