Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both questions: it gives reasons for interest in a home’s past and outlines ways to investigate it. Curiosity is illustrated by wanting to know who lived in a house before, while renovation is presented as another motive; the suggestions to ask neighbours or former owners, consult records, and visit libraries or museums are relevant. This coverage is sufficient, but some ideas are less fully explained than others. In particular, the claim that historical knowledge helps people renovate is unclear: explain how knowing a building’s age or previous alterations could guide renovation decisions. The research methods are listed but not supported with a specific example. Developing these points more clearly would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, one on research methods, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In addition” help readers follow the main points, and the conclusion returns to both parts of the question. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, linking is sometimes mechanical, and a few connections are unclear. For example, “Consequently, these are the main reasons of this trend” does not add a clear logical step, while “It helps them” has an uncertain reference. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make links between claims explicit, so each paragraph develops rather than simply lists points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate to communicate the topic, with relevant terms such as “property,” “previous owners,” “photographs,” and “property records.” The response also attempts more specific language, including “reconstruct” and “historical information.” However, noticeable word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling errors reduce precision: “people are interesting in learning” should be “people are interested in learning,” and “the whole history” is not a natural way to describe information needed for renovation. Misspellings such as “neigbours,” “concluson,” and “curiosty” also weaken control. Build a more accurate range around researching buildings and renovation, and proofread carefully; this will make the ideas sound more natural without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, including “When people reconstruct their house, they just want…” and “They may have useful information about the house and its past.” Most meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in both basic patterns and more complex sentences. For example, “They may be curious about historical thing and stories, encourage them…” lacks a grammatical connection between the ideas, and “These source can help them understand the house was built” has problems with number agreement and clause structure. There are also errors in articles, prepositions, and verb forms, as in “where they live in” and “people can visits.” Aim to make each clause complete and check agreement and verb forms, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
