Student answer (Band 6.0)

In a few countries, it is becoming a popular trend to discover the history of the house or building people are living in. It is because people are interested in the historical architectures, durability and designs of older buildings. They can find information about this by asking their parents or grandparents or even by researching about the materials used in the building on the internet.

The reason why people are interested in the history of the building they live in is because oftenly they feel ahead of their time. Their design are very unique. They are very durable and can surive heavy rains and earthquakes. The architectures of those building are quite breathtaking too. For example, many schools in Pakistan were constructed during the British colonial rule and they are still being used and are in extremely good condition. They were contructed about 80 to 90 years ago but still standing tall.

People can research about these buildings by first asking their parents or grandparents. If they cannot answer it, then they can investigate in their neighbourhood about when these buildings were constructed and who designed and architected these structures. People can even get information about the history of the building by exploring details about the materials used in their development, because many of those materials are not being used today so if you get the knowledge about the era they were used in, you can estimate the age of buildings.

In conclusion, people are becoming increasingly interested in finding the history of their homes and buildings due to their ahead of the time designs, architectures and how strong they are even after decades of their construction. They can easily research about that history by asking their elders or looking through the internet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions: it gives reasons for interest in older buildings, including their distinctive designs, durability and historical architecture, and suggests asking relatives, neighbours or using online research. The example of schools built during British colonial rule in Pakistan is relevant and helps illustrate durability. However, the explanation of why residents want to know a building’s history is not fully clear: “they feel ahead of their time” does not explain the motivation, and the discussion focuses more on appreciating old buildings than on why people investigate their own homes. The research methods are also unevenly developed; the materials-based method is explained, while online research is only briefly mentioned. Clarifying motivations and extending each research method would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, a paragraph on research methods, and a conclusion. This makes the main progression easy to follow, and the example is placed appropriately within the reasons paragraph. Linking phrases such as “For example,” “If they cannot answer it,” and “In conclusion” help connect points. To strengthen the organisation further, avoid repeating the same summary of design and durability in both the introduction and conclusion, and make the relationship between ideas more explicit. For instance, the shift from asking relatives to investigating materials could be signposted as a separate research approach. Some references, such as “that history,” are broad; naming the building’s past or construction history would make the links more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “historical,” “durable,” “colonial rule,” “constructed,” and “materials,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “breathtaking” and “standing tall.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision: “ahead of their time” is used unclearly, “historical architectures” is unnatural, and “architected these structures” is not the usual expression for designing a building. Spelling errors such as “surive” and “contructed” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and use a wider range of precise terms for architectural features, historical significance and research sources.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay includes both simple statements and longer sentences with subordinate clauses, for example, “If they cannot answer it, then they can investigate…” and the explanation beginning “because many of those materials…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In “Their design are very unique,” the subject and verb do not agree; “oftenly they feel” has an incorrect adverb form and awkward sentence structure; and “many schools… were constructed… and they are still being used” shifts tense within the same description. There are also issues with articles and number, as in “the history of the building” when referring generally to buildings. Review agreement, tense consistency and sentence patterns, then proofread for punctuation and grammatical accuracy.
