Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent times, work has been big part part human life. Most of the workers often works continuously which leaves them with very less time for other fun activities. This essay intends to analyze the benefits and drawbacks of long working hours.

On the one hand, there are many merits of working long hours. Primarily, it let the employee focus on a particular task and give them enough chances to complete it on time. It is often common that most of the workers are unable to complete their job before deadline which results in low performance. As a result, employers announce layoffs because of low productivity. Therefore, extra hours work will give enough time to complete any task. Additionally, working for longer hours make employees competitive at workplace. It is mostly considered that higher authorities notice employee with more average working time. As a result, there are high possibility of getting promotion too.

On the other hand, there are several demerits of the same. Firstly, many people get frustrated because of long shifts and without relaxation. This often create fatigue and leads to major health issues. For instance, employee who is working on computer for more than 8 hours without any break will have headache. Hence, it will result in less productivity. Secondly, work-life balance is one of the most important thing in existing era. So, giving equal time to personal life is as necessary as working for any organization. For example, if a person do what they like to do in their free time makes them energetic and enthusiastic for other works as well. As a result, they can perform much better if get some time for themselves.

To conclude, due to work pressure, many choose to work for longer than usual to complete their job on time and be competitive in organization. But I personally think the disadvantages outweighs the advantages as it leads to many long term health issues and less productivity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, providing both advantages and disadvantages of long working hours. You clearly state your position in the conclusion that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on productivity and health. However, some points could be developed further; for instance, the argument about 'competitiveness' is a bit brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with more detailed explanations or specific examples. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Additionally', and 'Consequently' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'the same' in 'demerits of the same'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'productivity', 'frustrated', and 'enthusiastic'. There are some instances of awkward phrasing or minor errors, such as 'big part part human life' (repetition) and 'existing era' (which is slightly unnatural). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, some word choices are imprecise. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary is used in the correct context to convey your ideas more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'workers often works', 'employee... will have headache') and article usage (e.g., 'at workplace'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are noticeable throughout the text. To achieve a higher score, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of articles and plural forms.
