Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this competitive era every one is in a rat race of making more money because nowadays money holds a vital significance in society. Not only individuals are spending most of the time at work, but having very little interest and time for leisure activities. From my point of view it has more demerits which i will be discussing in the upcoming paragraphs.

To begin with, a life without purpose. In other words, people who are working hard has to have some purpose in their life in order to enjoy living it. If an individual with no dreams to fulfill or no expensive leisure activities to pursue will eventually lost motivation to earn money. Moreover, lack of social life or connections. Individuals who only focus on work without thinking about work-life balance will have have no or less social connections which can impede their overall career growth. Lastly, working long hours will lead to family issues. In simple terms, if a parent spent very little time with their child then it will directly affect mental health of a child and they will lost interest from their parents and may engage in some bad habits because there is no one to oversee them.

On the other hand, I believe to have a prosprous and secure retirement life one should grind hard in the age between 20 to 25. As this will help them to pursue their future goals. I believe there should be balance between work life and social life.

In conclusion, Although there is no harm in working hard to achieve success in career or life but one should always account factors like family, friends, enjoyments and social connections which plays an important role in a life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the disadvantages of working long hours, though the position is somewhat weakened by the inclusion of a counter-argument in the third paragraph that contradicts the initial stance. While the main ideas—lack of purpose, social isolation, and family issues—are relevant, they are somewhat under-developed. For instance, the point about 'a life without purpose' is a bit abstract and could have been supported with more concrete examples. To reach a higher band, ensure that the position remains consistent throughout the essay and that each supporting point is fully extended with clear, logical explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'If an individual with no dreams to fulfill or no expensive leisure activities to pursue will eventually lost motivation.' The flow between the second and third paragraphs is slightly disjointed, as the third paragraph introduces a conflicting view without a strong transitional phrase to signal the shift.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated phrasing like 'rat race,' 'vital significance,' and 'impede their overall career growth.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'lost motivation' (should be 'lose') and 'prosprous' (spelling error). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more varied collocations and ensuring that less common vocabulary is used accurately in the correct context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'people who are working hard has to have' (subject-verb agreement), 'will eventually lost' (incorrect tense), and 'if a parent spent' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that affect the overall clarity. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage would be highly beneficial.
