Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this progressive era, majority of people spend more time on their work rather than leisure activities. This essay will suggest that to complete basic needs are the biggest advantages, but health issues and weak relationships are the primary disadvantages.

Firstly look up the benefits, working long hours is that people can earn more money. With the help of money people can easily complete their basic needs and save their money for future careers. For example, a person earn more money to buy a clothes, not only luxury cars but also house with modern facilities like WiFi and so on. They also spend money on their children's education and his family desires. As a result, long working hours can also help people gain more experience and improve their careers.

However, there are sone disadvantages of this trend but one prominent disadvantage is health issues. working for many long hours can be bad for physical and mental health as people may not enough sleep, rest as well as exercise. For instance, an office worker works ten to twelve hours everyday may feel stressed and more tired. Also, they may be fatty due to less physical activity. another drawback is less social interaction between not only friends but also family members. They always busy in their office work and not give proper quality time to their family members. this may lead to create conflicts between them. As a consequence, it may breakdown the interpersonal skills.

In conclusion, although working for long hours provide more money and better careers options but it put adverse impact on both body and family members.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of working long hours. The position is clear from the introduction, and the main ideas are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of 'basic needs' is a bit simplistic, and the discussion on health and relationships could be more deeply explored with more sophisticated reasoning. While the task is fulfilled, the supporting arguments lack the depth required for a higher band score. The conclusion is also quite brief and merely restates the main points without adding a final synthesis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions feel forced. For example, the phrase 'Firstly look up the benefits' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun usage in the final paragraph. While the overall structure is coherent, the management of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'complete basic needs' (instead of 'meet basic needs'), 'fatty' (instead of 'overweight' or 'obese'), and 'breakdown the interpersonal skills'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on common, everyday terms. While the meaning is generally clear and the errors do not impede communication, the lack of more sophisticated or precise lexical items prevents a higher score in this category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('a person earn', 'it put adverse impact'), article usage ('a clothes'), and sentence fragments or run-on sentences. While the meaning is usually understandable, these persistent errors are noticeable and detract from the overall quality of the writing. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the punctuation is occasionally faulty, which limits the score to the 5.5–6.0 range.
