Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of working long hours. The writer outlines some positive aspects, such as career advancement, skill development, and increased productivity, as well as negative consequences like health issues and reduced personal time. However, the position is not consistently clear throughout the essay, and the ideas presented are often repetitive and under-developed, particularly in the overly long second paragraph that crams too many separate points together. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the lack of thorough development and clear structural division places this performance in the Band 5 category.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays severe issues with structural organisation and coherence. The response is essentially broken down into massive, poorly controlled run-on sentences, especially in the second and third paragraphs, which feature stringy clauses linked by repetitive conjunctions like 'and' or 'where'. Paragraphing is neglected, with the second paragraph attempting to cover too many disparate ideas without appropriate separation. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and inaccurately, such as 'where that leads him' or 'so leaving leisure time', which disrupts the logical progression of ideas. Consequently, overall cohesion fails to meet the criteria for Band 6, meriting a Band 4.5 or 5.0, rounded to 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, relying heavily on everyday terms like 'working long hours', 'leisure activities', and 'advantages'. There are frequent word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'sharper our barain' (brain), 'home stuff', 'mental behaviour', and 'weekly thrice'. While the writer attempts to use some less common words like 'productivity' and 'communication', the high frequency of spelling and lexical errors ('concentarted', 'chnages', 'spenidng', 'regualr', 'instaed') occasionally strains the reader and restricts the lexical score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. The text is characterised by very long, sprawling sentences that lack proper punctuation, resulting in run-on structures like the entire second paragraph, which consists of just two massive sentences. There is a very limited range of accurate complex structures, and attempts at subordination often lead to tangled syntax and fragments, such as 'so leaving leisure time for the activtes is so important and need to work regualr hours instaed of working long hours.' Frequent errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and basic punctuation significantly impede readability, placing the response firmly at Band 5.
