Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing the disadvantages of working long hours, such as negative health impacts and lack of work-life balance. However, the treatment of the prompt is incomplete because it focuses exclusively on disadvantages without explicitly weighing them against potential advantages, as the question 'does this situation have more advantages or more disadvantages?' invites a comparative evaluation. The position is clear at the end ('working for long hours... is a disadvantage'), but the development of ideas is limited and repetitive, relying on general statements like 'people are getting bored with the same routine' without deeper extension. Examples provided, such as the friend working in an IT company, are relevant but lack sufficient elaboration. Consequently, this performance aligns closely with Band 5 descriptors for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response shows an attempt to organise ideas into paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression is hampered by poor logical flow and inadequate cohesive devices. Many sentences are linked clumsily using repetitive connectors like 'and' or 'and because', creating a run-on effect that obscures the logical relationships between ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is faulty due to poor referencing ('amnd this effects people', 'and they were not be able'). Furthermore, referencing pronouns are sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of sentence starters limits the overall coherence of the essay, placing it firmly at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on standard half-band marking practices.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, struggling to meet the demands of the task. While the writer attempts some less common terms like 'depressed', 'irritated', and 'short-tempered', these are undermined by frequent spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'effect' instead of 'affect', 'rutine', 'irriteted', 'depresed', 'daioloy', 'annoied', and 'encries eh strenth'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and spelling errors occur frequently throughout the text, occasionally causing strain for the reader ('duedate', 'relexed'). These characteristics reflect the Band 4 descriptor profile, where basic vocabulary and frequent errors constrain precision and communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the response, characterized by a predominance of simple structures and frequent errors in complex formations. The writer attempts complex sentences, but they are consistently flawed by inaccurate syntax and subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'he use to work' instead of 'used to work', 'people are getting bored... in conclution of this they are getting', and 'were not be able'. Punctuation is also problematic, with sentences starting with lowercase letters and run-on structures lacking proper boundary markers. Errors are frequent and often impede the reader's understanding, which corresponds to the Band 4 descriptors for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
