Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that many individuals working extended period of time in office and have no time for recreational activities. There are several beenfits and drawbackes related to this phenomenon. This essay will discuss why disadvanatages of working long hours are far weight its advantages.

There are several benefits of working long hours in offices. The first advantage is comfortable living. People who work more can earn more money and affort various facilities to live a luxurious life such as a house with all facilities and household helps. The second benefit is achievment in professional goals. A person who work hard in office can easily get promotions and rewards as employers can easily impress by this type of individuals. For example, a person who stays extra hours in evenings can do more work than other employees. This can easily notice by their employer and he will get a promotion.

There are also some downside with a person who work extra hours in offices. The most common disadvantage is compromised in mental health. Working longer hours means a person can do continous work for longer period of time without any breaks. As a result, his brain become fatigue due to overexersion of work. Another drawback is sense of loneliness. Person who give priority to his work can spend very little time with his family. Consequently, he misses all the opportunity to spend happy moments with his family members. Apart from that, he has no friends to share his life journey as he is not going out for any recreational activity.

To conclude, working long hours have both benefits and drawbacks, but I believe the disadvantages such as mental illness and loneliness are more than the advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of working long hours, eventually taking a clear position that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning financial comfort and professional goal achievement for the benefits, and mental health and loneliness for the drawbacks. However, some arguments tend to overgeneralise or lack deeper elaboration, keeping the task response at a Band 6.5 level. For example, the explanation of how an employer notices someone staying extra hours is somewhat basic. The prompt is fully satisfied in terms of taking a stance and providing relevant examples from general knowledge, but the overall depth of idea development places it firmly in the competent range rather than fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression with a standard four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes (benefits versus disadvantages). Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as "The first advantage is", "The second benefit is", and "To conclude". However, referencing and cohesive links are occasionally mechanical or slightly awkward, such as "There are also some downside with a person who work extra hours" and "This can easily notice by their employer". Furthermore, the connection between ideas within sentences could be smoother. These minor cohesion flaws and repetitive cohesive frames justify a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas effectively. There are attempts at less common lexical items such as "recreational activities", "luxurious life", and "overexersion". However, there are numerous word choice, collocation, and spelling errors throughout the text, including "extended period of time" (periods), "beenfits" (benefits), "drawackes" (drawbacks), "affort" (afford), "achievment" (achievement), and "fatigue" (fatigued). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they recur frequently enough to prevent the score from reaching Band 6.5, making a Band 6.0 a fair and accurate assessment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. For instance, conditional or relative clauses are attempted, such as "People who work more can earn more money..." and "A person who work hard in office can easily get promotions...". Nevertheless, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and voice, such as "working individuals... have no time", "Person who give priority", "his brain become fatigue", and "can easily notice by their employer". Passive voice constructions are mishandled ("can easily notice" instead of "can easily be noticed"). Because errors occur frequently across complex and simple structures alike, the grammar is best characterised at Band 5.5.
